The Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, authorized by the VA, assists very low-income Veterans and their families who are either at risk of homelessness or experiencing homelessness.
Here’s how SSVF helps these Veterans:
- Case Management and Supportive Services: SSVF provides case management to help Veterans navigate the complexities of securing and maintaining housing, which includes connecting them with VA benefits, health care, mental health and substance use treatment, employment opportunities, legal services, and more.
- Homelessness Prevention: For those at imminent risk of losing their homes, SSVF offers services designed to prevent eviction and housing loss. This can include crisis resolution and temporary financial assistance for rent, utility arrears, and other housing-related expenses.
- Rapid Re-housing: For Veterans and families experiencing homelessness, SSVF aims to quickly rehouse them into permanent housing. This involves housing navigation assistance, temporary financial assistance (for rent, utilities, and move-in costs), and ongoing case management to support long-term housing stability.
The SSVF program operates with a “Housing First” approach, emphasizing placing individuals in permanent housing as quickly as possible and providing the necessary support services to help them maintain that housing.
Eligibility for SSVF typically requires the following:
